Lecture 18 ­ Observational Designs pt 3 Case Control Studies • Putative causal factor investigated as differentiating feature between cases (those  with the condition, illness) and controls (those without) o 1. Case identified; controls identified o 2. Matching conducted (matching your cases with your controls ie.  matching sex, traits etc.) o 3. Exposure history assessed (ie. lung cancer: how many smokes/day) o 4. Covariation between “caseness” and exposure determined o 5. Conclusions drawn about relationship between exposure and caseness Cohort Studies • prospective study following a group of participants forward in time, to examine  the temporally lagged correlation between a predictor and a criterion o 1. Cohort established o 2. Predictor measured o 3. Follow up period elapses (additional measures) o 4. Criterion is measured o 5. Conclusions are drawn about relationship between predictor and  criterion Observational Study Example 1 Quasi Experimental Example 2 Manipulated Factor • text cue exposure: o eat as much as you like (facilitating) o eat the bare minimum (restraining) o no instruction (control) Observed Fac
