Lecture 20 ­ Descriptive Research 2 Early Cases of HIV (when know one knew what HIV/AIDS was) Some context: • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) – a version of herpes virus (harmless in normal  humans during latent stage, but dangerous to immunocomprised patients) • Candidal Mucosal Infection – “thrush”; a fungal infection involving the mouth Activity (Read the description + editorial note): ONE OF THESE WILL BE ON  QUIZ 1) What are the features that make this a case report/series? a. Very rare circumstances that have not been documented before b. No control or manipulation of variable as a control / no baseline  established before the medical interventions c. More than 1 case involved = Case Series 2) Was the editorial note useful? Why? a. Yes, the note helped summarize the commonalities and synthesize the  findings and gives rise to some evidence
