Document Summary
People are born with the capacity to do wrong. We have both good and evil in us. Conformity needs to be explained, no deviance. The earliest versions of social control theory explained how social structure impacted high rates of crime. We all have different values and different beliefs. Social structure is not cohesive and breaks down. Durkheim because we are all close and live in a close community, social bonds help us not commit crime. When social bonds disintegrate, we get high rates of deviance. Two types of suicide happen when social bonds break down. Egoistic suicide (self) - occurs when there are weak social restraints and the person acts in self interest. Relying on yourself more than the group. Anomic suicide (society) - occurs when a lack of social integration, social cohesion leaves a society without a clear set of morals and beliefs. Social life isn"t influenced by shared values.
