Lecture: police patrol work the kansas city patrol experiment. Patrol work is reactive, when a member of public calls police. Being reactive means that police attend to a situation because a citizen has requested police assistance so this means that they don"t intrude too deeply into the publics life, and their not invading people"s privacy. Intrusion always has a reason due to someone calling them for a crime. Reactive strategy protects publics liberty, privacy and autonomy. If officers see something suspicious they can act on it = proactive. Police are visible due to cursors and uniform and it provides a certain degree of deterrence because the police are out there. Third view = great assistance to public in traffic accident & diminishes fear of crime. These assumptions finally tested in 1974 called kansas city preventative patrol experiment . Have control and variable groups (where the things change). To see whether the number of officers had an affect on crime.
