We are born with the capacity to do wrong, so there isn"t a need for an explanation of deviance. What is it that prevents us from breaking norms, what stops us. Some type of social structure led to crime rates and deviance; social transformation led to it: durkheim emphasized on social bonds. These bonds tied us together; influenced us to act a particular way. Lack of social integration would lead to crime: egoistic suicide. Acts in its own personal interest: anomic suicide. Occurs when there is a lack of social integration. When rapid or extreme change from one mode of living threatens norms, and causes group norms to disintegrate. W/o social oriented goals, people are more likely to be deviant. According to durkheim, regardless of which social suicide, it is social integration that matters. Gangs were to dominate in areas where social control is weak: characteristics of gangs, violence isn"t one of them:
