Jazz as folk music when africans from different societies and cultures were thrown together and lumped and labeled as one big minority blacks or african- Americans lots of musical traditions were mixed. Helped create the hybrid nature of american culture and music jazz was born out of vocal traditions but developed mostly as an instrumental genre . This hybrid nature helped establish an american musical identity. Call and response incredibly important very much a testament of how strong the african influence is to jazz. Syncopation: distresses on the off beats displacement. The blue has two lines answered by a third line poetic. Bessie smith made first recordings in 1923 very important. Big folk tradition minstrelsy initially performed by white people who would paint faces black and would perform what they thought was black music, and acting, singing, and talking the way they thought black did.
