Deep culture: the cultural programming of the mind (shaules 10). Includes values, beliefs, ways of thinking, shared understandings about how to behave/navigate. Includes action chains that make daily life predictable and manageable (12) As we encounter difference, we also learn about ourselves. Individual can be larger or smaller depending on the culture. Violence direct (intentional, physical), structural (e. g. government policies), and cultural (deeper values/prejudices) Responses to conflict: management ensuring it does not lead to violence, resolution resolving issues, transformation examining and transforming deep cultural beliefs. The ability to imaginatively enter into and participate in the world of the cultural other . Lack of empathy makes the others appear less human, and therefore leads to the greater ability to ignore their needs. Professionalism being good at what we do. Concern addressing ethnonationalist/ethnoreligious strife and identity conflict. Pragmatism recognizing that people solve conflicts in different ways. Respect listening to marginalized voices, avoiding cultural imperialism .
