Individualistic (low-context) cultures prefer directness, specificity, frankness in stating demands, confrontation, and open self-disclosure (augsburger 28). Collectivist (high-context) cultures tend toward indirect, ambiguous, cautious, non- confrontational, and subtle ways of working through communication and relational tangles (augsburger 28). Face a projected image of one"s self in relational context (augsburger 85). In conflict there is not just material interest also reputation and consequences. Collectivist cultures importance of avoiding direct confrontation. Analyzing what is at stake: conflict issues and messages. Instrumental issues: concrete wants/demands of each party (e. g. dimitri & mona) Relational issues: quality of interaction between parties (e. g. warlord)
