PHIL110B Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Autonomous Agent, Deontological Ethics
Document Summary
Rousseau: there are differences between male and female nature that need to be acknowledge and respected. The essentialist view: men and women have different natures and these are reflected in different social, intellectual and ethical characteristics pertaining to each. Male nature has not been kept adequately in check (war, violence etc. ) The social constructivist view: what differentiates men and women is not their essential natures, but their histories and their social cultural definitions. A female ethic: the idea that women have a distinct moral perspective, the values and priorities of which differ from those of men. A state of moral development involves the application of abstract principles of logic to specific problems and dilemmas. Some argue that men gain moral maturity much sooner and faster than women do. This ides fails to capture women"s perspectives and reasoning on moral problems. Principles require the impartiality of our moral regard for others.
