Like poor writing, bad graphical displays distort or obscure the data, make it harder to understand or compare, or otherwise thwart the communicative effect which the graph should convey. Topic can be suggested by theoretical interest or dictated by practical concerns: academics vs. practitioners. In academic research, problems are made concrete and specific, and the topic is narrowed: manageable and amendable to completion, proposal responding to funding opportunities or degree requirements. Planning problems in practice can generally appear to be quite concrete and specific.
