PSCI244 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Autocracy, Security Dilemma, Dynamic Inconsistency
Document Summary
Discussion and review #4: the logic of life under. How do we classify different types of authoritarian regimes: two types of political power, to make policies (leader) If regime is authoritarian the population does not have power over leader"s decisions (cannot form a kind of constraint with regards to the leader"s policy making ability) The population doesn"t have the power to select the leader, Conditions:(i) ability to participate in elections (ii) genuine choice on the ballot. 2- deprived of power to constrain leader"s policy making ability. Monarchist regime: comes from royal family (same with key officials as well) The power is entirely vested in the organization not the dictator (e. g the power to oppress comes from an organization). Well-ordered line of command (bureaucracy -mechanical, not chaotic) Security organization must be as large as possible (massive man power combined with deep financial resources) Dilemma is when you face two difficult security risks: palace coup from fellow elites (unexpected, short-term threat)
