Definite Articles
o (masc. sing.) o chao the floor
a (fem. sing.) a porta the door
os (masc. plural.) os tectos the ceilings
as (fem. plural.) as janelas the windows
The definite article which corresponds to “the” in English, is used to designate a specific noun,
with which it agrees in gender and in number:
Use of the Definite Article
- First Names are preceded by the definite article
- Titles are preced by the definite article. Ex: senhor, senhora
- Name of continents, countries, islands and rivers. There are some excpetions. These
include Portugal, Angola, Cabo Verde, Mocambique, Timor, Sao Tome e Principe, Cuba,
Israel, Morrocos.
- Days of the week.
- Before possessive adjectives. Ex: a minha amiga, o nosso carro

- We use the articles because there is a noun in the name.
