Multiculturalism policy: first adopted in 1971, pierre eliot trudeau decided that multiculturalism needed to solved. Voluntary arrival: bring economic benefits or come for family reunification. Refugees: forced to flee home country, need for protection, settle permananetly. Internally displaced persons forced out of their homes but have not been able to enter another country. Camps set up on a border of a country that won"t let refugees pour over the border. Evacuees: granted temporary status in a country with the intention that person will go back to the country. Guest worker/temporary worker: expected to leave upon completion of a job. Nearly 70% of all immigrants live in montreal, toronto or vancouver. Immigration policy: early tension between preserving canadian whiteness and securing supply of migrant labour, until late 19th century, immigration policy was informal and discretionary, practices were racist, assimilationist. Introduced a points system based on occupational experience, education and language expertise.
