PSCI264 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Grassroots Democracy, Preposition And Postposition
Document Summary
Founding fathers are worried that the uneducated public would have too much control over the election process. State by state basis with rep by pop. The electoral college premise is that a candidate is rewarded all the seats of a state. Not just a percentage of the votes they earned. Therefore the rst past the post system makes some votes not count. With proportional representation, the victor holds the majority vote. The current system does not protect minorities. Big states can still over power the vote, and then an opposition vote is transferred to the candidate or not counted. Presidential candidates focus solely on swing states. Do not focus on the states that they know they will win. The states that are traditionally voting for one party, are not given as much attention, because their electoral college seats are already guaranteed . The system to guard the political future of america is no longer necessary.
