Lecture 11 Personality Personality – a person’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting - what makes us unique Two Grand Theories: 1) Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory - proposes that childhood sexuality and unconscious motivations influence personality 2) Humanistic approach - focused on our inner capacities for growth and self-fulfillment The Psychoanalytic Perspective - freud believed he could retrace the patient’s distant past leading into the patient’s unconscious, where painful unconscious memories, often from childhood, could be retrieved and released - beneath our awareness is the larger unconscious
