Document Summary

Sleep was restorative idea -> repair from wear and tear. Scientists too same view until 1950s: during certain periods of the night, people"s eyes started moving irradically (rem, rem didn"t fit restorative idea -> scientists changed their view. Sleep growth hormone released, as well as a hormone to synthesize protein and muscles. Physically-speaking, seems restorative: inside the brain, things are different. When going to sleep: breathing, metabolism, heart slow down, vision goes first, hearing shortly after, rapidly the others disconnect too. Hypnic jerk: whole body vibrates, occurs just as you"re going to sleep, accompanied by hypnogogic hallucinations. Sensation of falling/missing a step -> could wake you up. As you fall deeper and eeper into sleep, things change. Stage 1 very easy to wake you, brain wave activity changing. Stage 2 bursts of brainwave activity (muscle spasms) Stage 3/4 deep deep sleep, very hard to arouse someone, low frequency waves in brain activity, less than an hour to get into.
