Educational psychology: understanding and improving education, research focus in educational psychology, research methods. Academic self-concept (how you believe you are going to do) positively correlated with academic performance. Moving together in the same direction = positive. Correlation: r ranges from -1. 0 to +1. 0. Closer r is to zero = weaker the correlation is. Weak correlation between academic performance and admittance exams such as the mcat: experimental studies highly controlled. Only studies that can infer cause and effect. Principles: describes how one thing influences something else, can be generalized, must be proven time and time again to be true. Theories: explain why principles are true, need the principle before the theory, theories are derived from a principle that is created from multiple studies. Examples: a researcher reported that 40% of students received some form monetary reward for receiving a grade of b+ or better in the last year.
