Fear and af liation studies are about how we come to understand fear and what it"s all about: fear is not an internal state, instead it"s how we relate to other people (our relationships) Brought people into the lab and had one of two conditions (nice vs. scary doctor) Nice condition: experimenter is light hearted, no lab coat, no apparatus but he says almost the same thing (effect of shock on people but say it won"t be painful) Gave subjects two options: could wait in a room with a comfy chair, magazines, etc. or could wait in a sparse room with not much in it but there are other people there.
