PSYCH261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: David Chalmers, Daniel Dennett, Panpsychism
Document Summary
Relation between conscious states and brain activity. In order to bring consciousness into materialism: he can"t figure out a material explanation, so consciousness is a fundamental property of matter; everything is conscious. Degree of consciousness is determined by how complex the system is. Epiphenomenal: doesn"t cause anything, it happens to be there, doesn"t have any effect. Theory of evolution by natural selection: the individuals in a species show variability in their traits. The ones with genotypes that make then unable to survive in their environment will die off and not pass on the corresponding genes. There has to continually be a mechanism to select new traits. Over generations, the organisms change, this happens due to mutations. Intelligence, morals and personality were dependent on genomes and vary among individuals. (relate: cranioscopy where they also valued innate individual differences) Wanted to use these traits and breed them to become super races.
