Helps infants understand that meanings are shared. Shows what kind of information is transmitted through language. Communication is related to how and why we use language. Does not explain how language/grammar is acquired. How language can be used to communicate. What other skills do infants need to develop to have a competent conversation/communication with parents. Requires you to 1. understand what your partner is talking about or intending to talk about. Sometimes need to know when they are sarcastic (doesn"t match literally what the word means, but still should understand the intent of the sarcasm) Have to 2. take another person"s perspective into account (what they know, or don"t know already) 3. learn how to engage in longer conversations (keep on the same topic, keeping it connected) Sociolinguistics (learning how to communicate like a member of your particular language community) Not going to focus on this ***
