Sigmund freud: emotional disorders spring from unconscious dynamics: psychoanalysis: analyze unconscious through free associations and dreams. He focussed on conflict between different parts of the personality: personality arises from efforts to resolve conflict between our biological impulses and the social restraints against them. There is a conflict between innate impulses and societal messages: freud believed that 3 systems interacted and controlled how a person behaves. Operates based on the pleasure principle-> seeks out pleasure at all costs. Ego: partly conscious, deals with demands of reality.
