Psych 321
Two Number systems:
Magnitudes and individuation
Goals:
o Illustrate how each system works
o Show evidence that non-human animals have both systems
Possibility 1: Individuation make “mental tally”
Are there “IIIIIII” circles on this slide?
How tallying works: Keep track of who’s who
Have to remember which ones I touched just so I don’t have to count or
tally the same circle over again
Possibility 2: make a magnitude
Percept transformation 1 ( estimate where things are and average size;
estimate of where things are ) transformation 2 (“lump” and make a
magnitude)
NOTE: THE DOTS YOU GENERATE SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE SAME SIZE.
Two systems: individuation and magnitudes
Individuation very precise but limited: can only keep track of 3 or 4 at
once; conscious and works automatically
o Can keep track of the correct object for around 2 -3
o What you’re doing for small numbers are not the same for what
you’re doing in large numbers
o For large numbers, you can’t keep track of all the numbers in large
group but we can still have an estimate of how many numbers are
there
o HEAR PODCAST FOR THE THIRD ONE
Magnitudes not nearly as limited but not very precise based on
guesstimates
