PSYCH101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Facial Feedback Hypothesis, Origins Game Fair, Emotional Expression
Module 7 - Emotion
Section 1 - What is emotion?
Motivation - Pursuit of goal - directed behaviour
Ex: Hunger motivates us to eat food.
Motivation - Hunger
Behaviour - Eating food
Goal - Prevent starvation
Two types of Motivation -
1. Drive - We engage in behaviour in order to diminish the motivation. Ex:
Hunger. A drive is an unpleasant internal state that results from deprivation.
Thus, we act to reduce the motivation.
2. Incentive - A desirable stimuli that motivates us to pursue it. Ex: Eating
when you are not hungry
Emotions -
1. These are motivational systems
2. Joy and anger motivate us to approach/engage with a stimulus
3. Fear or disgust motivate us to avoid a stimulus
4. Emotions only motivate actions. They do NOT determine those actions.
Valence - Emotions have valence which is the subjective experience of the
affective response.
1. Positive Valence - Pleasant to experience. Ex: Joy.
2. Negative Valence - Anger or fear. Can be aversive.
Features of emotional responses -
Adaptive -
1. They promote survival or reproduction.
2. Ex: Fear motivates us to escape threatening stimuli.
Mood -
1. Longer lasting and less intense than emotions.
2. Positive mood - Motivates us to increase overall level of activity and pursue
more goals when opportunities are good.
