The initial, brief storage of sensory information (example: if you hear or see a new phone number) Various types of sensory memory: visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile. Vast majority of research has been focused on visual (iconic) and auditory (echoic) sensory memory. A good example of iconic memory is viewing lightning it appears to be in the air for a second or so but in reality it disappears very quickly. This is your iconic memory is storing the image. Presented participants with a brief display of a 3x4 matrix of letters (50 milliseconds) Then asked participants how many letters they saw. Participants could report 4-5/12 of the letters.
