Lots of active sleep (8 hrs) and quiet sleep (8 hrs. ) Active vs. quiet sleep = rem (dreaming) vs. non-rem sleep (in diagram, above yellow line = Rem sleep accounts for 50% of a newborn"s total daily sleep. As life course progresses: dramatic decline in amount of sleep awake for a lot of the day, dramatic decline in amount of rem sleep. Neurons = cells of the brain that meet with others. Myelin sheath = pillow-like structures that coat the axon, insulate and even help transmit signal faster. Axon = means of transmitting electrical signal from cell body, eventually initiating the release of neurotransmitter. Synapse = where 2 neurons talk to each other. Dendrites = a short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body.
