Exceptional students: students who have unusually high abilities in particular areas or disabilities that impact learning and may require special education or other service. Disability: the inability to do something specific such as walk or hear. A disadvantage in a particular situation, sometimes caused by a disability. Having visual impairment is a handicap if you want to drive a car, but it is not a handicap if you want to make music or talk on the phone: special education. You can"t get special ed. unless you have a label on your file. Mandated by the government and school board. Labels serve a good purpose, but can be problematic. Can"t receive any kind of accommodation without a label. Can be taxing to go through an assessment, time, money, etc. Self fulfilling prophesy: acting according to the label you receive, what if you"re misdiagnosed, use people first language. Students receiving special education not special education students.
