SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY prediction that makes it come true
1. ROSENTHAL AND JACOBSON TEACHER EXPECTANCY EFFECT
Teacher expectancy effect went to classrooms and conducted a standardized test. Then
they pick 5 students randomly and told the class that they’ll be bloomers/ get to do well the
next year. And the students were actually doing well/ better after one year
2. ZANNA AND PACK ATTRACTIVE GUY VS. UNATTRACTIVE GUY
Women (Ps) thought they will interact with the guy
Condiiton 1: Attractive Guy; Condiiton 2: Unattractive guy
The guy either likes traditional or Non-traditional women
Session 1 take sex-stereotypic trait ratings, and let them describe themselves with adjectives
Session 2 (3 weeks later) they meet guy and find out what he likes
Take sex-stereotypic trait ratings again and anagram test
Results:
Results 2: when he likes non traditional woman
Somebody’s expectation in your behavior or what they like in your behavior creates its own
reality.
3. Word, Zanna, and Cooper Stereotypes and self-fulfilling prophecy
Study 1 - Whites interview Blacks measure non-verbal behavior
Real subject: interviewers. Do the interviewers conclude that white and black candidates
differ?
Distance of where they sit: Closer to the whites
Interview length: longer to the whites, cut off with the blacks
Speech errors: won’t screwed up with whites, and screwed up in blacks
STUDY 2:
Confederates interview White subjects and treat them like the Blacks or the Whites were
treated in Study 1
Real subject the group of whites
When whites were treated as blacks, they pull sit further away
How friendly do they rate the interviewer? Interviewers were more friendly with whites.
How many times do they made mistakes? People like blacks screwed up during the
interview
If you think that whites were really blacks, and think that whites will do better in the
interview, that expectation is mediated to how do they treat them.
PIECES OF THE SEL FULFILLING PROPHECY
1. Confirmation Bias - seeing what you expect to see not yet self-fulfilling prophecy
because the expectation is all in the head
* Darley & Gross (1983) - Perceptions of Hannah
* Hannah is a girl from an elementary school
* Conditions: Picked up Hannah from the Mansion or Picked up Hannah from the trailer
park
* Another condition: See her taking math and reading tests. And asked Ps How good is
Hannah? (Densed, Average performance)
* Poor or rich Hannah, Good or Bad Hannah
* She’s good in reading when she comes from the mansion and very bad in reading when
she comes from the trailer park
*When she’s from mansion – she’s smart; when she’s from the trailer park – she’s dumb
*People are creating own reality in their minds
2. Behavioral Confirmation - Causing people to act the way you expect
* Snyder, Tanke, & Berscheid (1977)
* Men believe women are attractive or unattractive and then they have a real conversation. The two
sides of the conversation were taped separately.
* Men ask women questions that elicit physical attractiveness stereotype (men were more pleasant to
women perceived to be attractive)
* Women act in accord with the physical attractiveness stereotype, the stereotype fullfills itself (women
perceived as attractive were more pleasant & the men perceived them this way.
* Behavior Confirmation - the men’s behavior creates confirmation of the stereotype
* The prophecy that she’ll be nicer when she’s attractive and nice will be true because you treat them
nice.
