Systematic evaluation and measurement of psychological, biological, and social factors that helps clinicians acquire the info they need to understand and help their patients. Grouping together categories on the basis of shared attributes (clinical classification is called nosology) Three components determine the value of an assessment. Across items, over time(test-retest), across assessors (interrater), etc. The process by which standards & norms are determined to help ensure uniformity of procedures in administrating and scoring a test. Therapist empathy, validation and support -> build alliance. Enable expression of negative emotions and potentially embarrassing personal information in a safe environment. Presenting problems: nature and course, history, and possible causes. Personal history: family upbringing & early learning history, education/work, relationships, medical issues, cultural context. Baseline functioning against which to measure effectiveness of treatment and predict future behavior. Awareness of person, place and time (oriented x3) Purpose: identify problematic (i. e. target) behaviors and their antecedents and consequences.
