Common conceptions: critical mothering causes anorexia, lack of self-control causes substance abuse problems, chemical imbalances cause depression, genes cause schizophrenia, video games cause violent behaviour, coddling causes narcissism. Treatment implications: treat one component, it effects the entire model, biological. Challenging beliefs about self as weird, a burden. Genetics and psychopathology: genes contribute to almost all mental disorders. 1/2 the explanation: disorder mostly polygenetic. One twin has mental disorder, 50% chance the other will develop one as well. Diathesis-stress model: individuals inherit genetic vulnerability (diathesis, experience predisposing (early in life) or precipitating stress (current, environmental stress interacts with genetics to predict mental disorders, ex. Small diathesis + large stressor: ex. History of eating disorder in distant relatives + dancer. Medium diathesis + medium stressor: ex. Large diathesis + small stressor: research support.
