Sense that one cannot predict or control upcoming events. Anxiety can be a healthy and adaptive response to danger that keeps us safe. Becomes unhealthy when it does not subside over time and impairs the normal day to day functioning. Pervasive and persistent symptoms of anxiety and fear. Excessive anxiety and worry about a range of events or activities. Uncertainty is viewed as stressful, upsetting, unfair, negative and should be avoided. Uncertainty is aversive and threatening (worry becomes a strategy to mentally plan and prepare for any eventuality) Gad higher iu than other anxiety disorders. Anxiolytics: benzodiazepines work through enhancing gaba: effective relief of short term symptoms, no long term benefit, physical/psychological dependence. Antidepressants work through serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssris) At least one attack followed by 1 month of: concern or worry about subsequent attacks or consequences, maladaptive behavioural changes related to attacks.
