Some neurons fire at a higher rate only when subject (rats) were in a particular location. Imaginary movements: the activity of the hippocampal place cells provide information about more than space; can also signal intended location (ca1 neurons encode both the current location and intended destination) Reconsolidation: a process of consolidation of a memory that occurs subsequent to the original consolidation that can be triggered by a reminder of the original stimulus; thought to provide the means for modifying existing memories. Ltp: events that interfere with consolidation such as disruption of protein synthesis also interfere with reconsolidation and can even erase memories or at least make them inaccessible. Memory is a convenient label for a group of independent capacities: divide by type (e. g. declarative/nondeclarative, divide by anatomy (e. g. hippocampal/basal ganglia, divide by time (e. g. short/long term, anterograde/retrograde) An example of the power of combining physiology and psychology: ltp.
