PSYCH261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dynein, Neurofilament, Cytoplasm
Document Summary
January 12, 2016 cells in the nervous system. Central nervous system (cns: brain (surrounded by skull, spinal cord (surrounded by spinal vertebrae, there are many interconnected neurons and glia . Peripheral nervous system (pns: tissue of the nervous system outside of the brain and spinal cord. Axons: cells may have many dendrites, but will only have one axon. The synapse: axon terminals bud up against the dendrites of another cell. the presynaptic axon terminal and the postsynaptic dendrite are separated by a synaptic gap. There are microtubules and microfilaments that arrive into this terminal button. These vesicles contain neurotransmitters that are released into the synaptic cleft (gap). The postsynaptic cell has these receptors that attach to the neurotransmitters, causing electrical changes in the postsynaptic cell. Unipolar: single branch comes from the soma. Bipolar: two branches come from the soma: one axon and one dendrite.
