Depends on how you understand and conceptualize the development and the persistence of mental health difficulties. For example: freud viewed difficulties as arising from the rejection of the unactable impulses of the id. Goal of therapy is to make the unconscious conscious and develop adaptive strategies for managing socially inappropriate impulses. Emotions focused therapy views problems as arising from emotions that are poorly understood and expressed. Goal is to evoke emotions in session and reflect, accept, and learn to regulate emotions. Research has a critical role in clinical psychology. We seek to understand the psychological factors involved in the development and persistence of mental health problems. We then test the efficacy of those interventions. We ensure we have fidelity in our practice. Make sure what you do with people is an execution of that intervention; psychotherapy needs to be cognitive behavioural therapy. Easy to dirft away from the central principles of a therapeutic interventions.
