Racism occurs because people who anticipate feeling upset/take a stand may respond with indiference when faced with racism act. P"s were experiencer or forecaster and exposed to racial slur incident. Moderate slur condition: typical, i hate it when black people do that . P selects one of the confederates as partner for a task. Forecasters in extreme + moderate racist comment conditions anticipate being more upset than forecasters in control condition. Experiencers report little distress regardless of condition. Experiencers 63% chose white confederate across both. People exaggerate extent they"d reject a racist because they overestimate emotional distress a racist comment would evoke.
