PSYCH356 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Androgyny, Gender Role

21 views1 pages

Document Summary

The traditional model of gender differentiation says gender is a unidimensional, bipolar construct which overlooks the possibility of androgyny (high masculinity and high femininity). Bem"s alternative model of gender differentiation says masculinity and femininity are separate, potentially orthogonal constructs (two dimensional). High f + high m = androgynous men/women. High f + low m = gender-typical women / gender-atypical men. Low f + high m = gender-typical men / gender-atypical women. Low f + low m = undifferentiated men/women. Androgynous individuals show greater role adaptability than gender-typed individuals. Gender-typical men and gender-atypical women are rigidly non-feminine even when high feminism is adaptive. Androgynous men are just as likely to assert their independence as gender-typical men, and just as likely to express nurturant behaviours as gender-atypical men. Role congruity theory is a social constructivist account of the evolution of gender differences.
