Document Summary

Understand two common theoretical explanations for marginal leisure behaviour. Appreciate how leisure can be both stigmatized and a means of destigmatizing. Deviant leisure: rethinking the good, bad and the ugly. Deeper leisure involvement as a coping resource in a stigmatized leisure context. What is the darker side of leisure? (max kaplan 1960) leisure is defined by, among other criteria, the criterion that is activity carried out in harmony with main values of the larger society. And, consonant with this stance, the typical leisure studies textbook has, over the past 50 years or so, devoted little or no space to the question of deviant leisure. Leisure"s central determinants (i. e. activity done for its own sake and attributed to self without obligation or repercussion) mean that it is possible for individuals to choose leisure pursuits that are not necessarily wholesome or beneficial. Leisure"s darker side refers to activities that exist on the fringe (or outside of) the boundaries of social acceptability.
