Lecture 13 – NP Sector Challenges Issues that Affect Future Vitality  Struggling with external environment and internal capacity to fulfill mission  Tracking economic contributions and inputs e.g., private giving & volunteer time.  Sector is beginning to be recognized as a crucial contributor to quality of life in Canada Immediate Organizational Challenges  Reductions in funding, difficult economic times  Need to compete for funding and volunteers  Move toward project funding instead of general support for organizational activities  Funding being restricted to direct program costs with little provision for infrastructure or overhead  Shortening in the length of time for which funding is provided, and more “red tape”  Mandated collaboration with other organizations  Increasing requirements for financial accountability Implications for Management  Makes strategic planning difficult – Hard to think ahead with so much uncertainty  Creates constant staff turnover – Lack of funding = less consistency  Increases administrative burden – Recruiting, screening, training, grant writing Implications for Organizations  Non-profit organizations are becoming cost efficient extension of government  Current funding environment makes it difficult for NPOs to act independently Implications for Sport and Rec Organizations  Increases in insurance costs and facility costs directly affect participation  Growth of non-traditional forms of participation provide innovative opportunities for service providers  Organizational capacity issues  Difficulty measuring performance Prospects for Private Giving  Non-profits are valued and trusted by the public, but accountability standards are increasing; we expect more!  Corporations are also recognizing the value of working with/investing in non-profits Fundraising Strategies  Annual Campaigns  Planned giving; endowments  Special events  Adopt a program 
