The inter-related amalgamation of business, organizations, labour, and government
agencies which totally or in part provide the means of transport, goods and services,
accommodation and other facilities, programs and resources for travel and recreation
2. Alternative Definition for Tourism
Tourism is essentially the commercialization of the human need to travel for the
sake of money and profit on the part of the tourism promoters at the expense of other
people, their culture, and environment
3. The International Tourist
Anyone visiting a country, other than that which is his or her usual place of
residence, for more than 24 hours but for less than 12 months. International tourists
stay overnight and may be visiting for a range of purposes

5. The Domestic Tourist
A traveler visiting a destination in his or her country of residence for at least 24
hours but less than 12 months for the purpose of recreation, holiday, sport, business,
meeting, convention, and/or visiting friends and relatives (VFR)
6. The International Excursionist
A person traveling for pleasure who visits another country for less than 24 hours
"Day tripper"
7. The Domestic Excursionist
A visitor traveling in his or her country of residence for any reason(s) given for
tourists but who stays for less than 24 hours at the destination
8. Tourist Destination
A single district, town or city, or a clearly defined and contained rural, coastal or
mountain area
o Characteristics:
Tourism services under various types of ownership
Other economic activities
Host community
Elected councils and public bodies
Mix of tourism resources
Destinations comprise a mix of tourism resources and services which
benefit from proximity and linkage
9. Hospitality Industry
Hospitality is often thought to be hotels and restaurants
However, the term has a much broader meaning
Hospitality also means "the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or
strangers with liberality and goodwill"
10. Hospitality Industry
Derived from the word "hospice"
o A medieval house of rest for travelers and pilgrims
Hospitality therefore not only includes hotels and restaurants
It also refers to other kinds of institutions that offer shelter, food or both, to people
away from their homes
