Cont lecture 2 the gospels: gospel of thomas. The actual gospel is made up of sayings attributed to jesus and not containing a passion or resurrection account. Claim: jesus is important as a healer and divine truth, not as resurrection. First into the debate like the q whether it makes sense to think of it as a complete gospel. Those who date it late, tend to view it as a gnostic gospel, radically altering the tradition on which it is dependent. Gnostic gospel: collection of about 52 ancient texts based upon the teachings of several spiritual leaders. Early followers of jesus were not convinced about jesus in the past. When you are confused, it is then that you receive insight. Jewish historian who is important not because he believed in jesus (he didn"t), but because he provides important independent verification that jesus existed. He is one of the most important sources for what judaism was like during that time.
