SCI238 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Celestial Equator, Circumpolar Star, Right Ascension
Document Summary
Rise & set times of planets tell you it"s position relative to the sun. Planets close to sun rise and set ~ same time as sun venus > see as bright white dot. Naked eye astronomy sky is bright bc we have atm scattering light all time. If it didnt, only place we see colour = looking at sun constellations = patterns of sky (ex. Motion of moon from 1 day to next & change in. Motion of sun from 1 day to next. Motion of planets > things that move aka wander stars move around the sky > star trail. Everything rotating around while earth rotating other way stars lie on great celestial sphere around earth. Stars lie at diff distances; arrow indicate where they appear to be located on the celestial sphere. Location in the sky location of things in sky > need spherical coordinate sys. On earth > use longitude & latitude (angles wrt centre of earth)
