Medieval Period (cont’d)
Tight swaddling is common
- prevents from moving if mother leaves them in field to work
- cry less
Babies left in same swaddling band for a week/longer
Use of wet nurses (hence, abandonment mode of child)
- following 2-3 yrs of weaning, returned home
No emo/edu attachment until after first 7yrs as it was a period of disease
- aar of neglect, possible reason for high mortality
General rule of Europe (rich/poor) to send children away from home for training/apprenticeships
Abandonment mode still exists today:
- crib
- baby monitor in room
- powdered milk
Capability mattered more than age
i.e. 38-yr-old who burned the bread beaten as an 8-yr-old would be
Freedom for children during MA b/c of little supervision (except when doing work)
- ~ to children now (have TV/media to teach)
Renaissance Period (14th -17th c.)
13th and 14th c.: rediscovery of classical works, dvlpmt of universities, growing humanism
- rebirth = renaissance mvmt out of MA and flowering of new possibilities
Bubonic plague ppl thought that maybe children were hope for future and that they had to take care of
them more
Improving status of children aar of growing interest in Jesus’ childhood
17th c.: age of the whip; children’s wills needed to be broken
- names became more important (rather than just being given name of dead sibling)
- names were religiously affiliated
- Protestant reform gave father more power (no more priest), and thus, child was of father and of God
Feudalism declined and capitalism flourished
Father became more responsible for well-being of family
Notion of separation of work and homefather had wages for labour force
17th c.: isolation of child to monitor their interactions and
- family became group united in house, less loyal to ancestors and kin than immediate members; bound
by privacy, affection, and i↑’g personal freedom
- father and mother friends rather than ordinate and subordinate, sharing tasks, etc.
- more interest in choice and romantic love
- maternal love—removed many women’s involvement in community life
- domesticitysealed off family as whole as separate from world
- growth of nuclear family (BUT ve b/c gave fathers despotic power)
Edu’ became more important more segregation of children from adults
Aar of printing press, Bible taken out of church and placed in home (fathers could make interpretations
themselves)
- child care manuals making way into homes greater literacy rates
New feeling that diseases should and could be ctrl’d
- growing confidence tht humans could make a difference (and not always thing ―It’s the will of God‖)
After swaddling, boys given freedom while girls made to wear corsets (distorted bodies; bones broken and
organs shifted)
- and yet girls were considered delicate
18th c.: decline of parental ctrl of marriage result of parent’s growing love for child’s (i), although not so
much for daughters yet
Mothers breastfed and weaned earlier so to resume sexual activities w/ father sooner
- assumed at that time that they could not become pregnant during hormonal imbalance
16th and 17th c.: emphasis on inferiority of children to adults
