SE101 Lecture Notes - Central Tendency, Standard Deviation
Document Summary
Measures of central tendency: mean, median and mode are measures of central tendency, accurate for large sets of observations, mean. Commonly used to measure central tendency of sample. Mean is susceptible to skew for small sets of observations: median. Middle data value when data is ordered by value. For small samples, more representative of central tendency. Less susceptible to skew by data values that are statistical outliers: mode. Data value that is observed with greatest frequency. For samples that cannot be easily ordered, mode is still feasible. Measures of spread: range, mean-square deviation, variance, and standard deviation, range. Range expresses differences between max and min data values. Measure of total spread of a sample: mean-square deviation, standard deviation.
