Origins of formal education traced to the early greeks. Prior to 16th century, education in europe was church-based. School class organized by level of knowledge in the 16th century. Students of varying ages met in one large room and were drilled on the basics. Once elementary material was mastered, students progressed to higher knowledge. Earliest educators (1600s) were jesuits, recollects, and others who sought to bring christian values to the aboriginal peoples. Goal of such education was to replace indigenous lifestyles and knowledge with european morality and consciousness. Europeans saw themselves as morally and intellectually superior to aboriginal peoples. Early 1800"s informal schooling was common in upper canada. Schooling occurred mainly through family tutoring, private schools, and religious schools. Constitution act of 1867 delegated responsibility of education to the provinces. Act allowed the state to collect taxes for schools with a guarantee for continued and separate denominational schools.
