Conceptual tools that help sociologists pose and answer questions. Sociology does not have a unified theory to explain education, rather it has competing theories: e. g. Sociology of education is considered low-end because it is often seen as rooted in applied practices, not theory. Different theories are rooted in different educational topics that require different and diverse conceptual tools. Best fit the study of massive numbers of people (i. e. global) Analytical focus is over centuries of time and large chunks of the geographic world. These theories are sometimes referred to as grand theories . Are approaches (i. e. not really theories) to sociological theorizing aimed at integrating theory and research. Analytical focus is geared to specific times and places (i. e. continental or national) Focus on the interrelation of two or more concepts applied to a very specific social process or problem. Best fit the study of small groups and their members (i. e. classrooms) Opportunities for making choices minimal in traditional societies.
