Document Summary

Memory and attention: an information processing model of the mind. One core assumption of information processing approach is that an individual has limited mental resources in processing information. Second core assumption is that information moves through a system of stores. There are three types of memory stores, sensory, short term and long term. Each store is characterized by its function, capacity and duration. It also has a set of control processes, attention, rehearsal, encoding and retrieval. These control processes govern the information within each store and control the movement of information between stores. Sensory memory: only vision and hearing sensory stores have been studied extensively. The function of this store is to hold info for long enough to process basic physical characteristics. This store holds all the sensory input that is entered into the sensory system, whether or not the person was paying attention.
