How were gonna gure out what number it is. Method ; critically examining the methods used to count the crime. Theory - set of concepts and de nitions about whats criminal. Ideology - set of linked ideas and beliefs. Sometimes you"re not aware you"re a victim. Sometimes you don"t know a crime was committed - ex in you home - doesn"t mean it didn"t happen. Records help police, judges make decisions for sentences. Statistics - concerned with whats common among individual sentences. You need records of many to make statistics. To change records into usable statistics, we need to consider many methodological issues; Units of count ; what is being counted. Level of aggregation ; how to combine data. De nitions ; how to de ne what is being counted. Data elements ; what info is to be collected. Counting procedures ; how to count units and elements.
