SOC229 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cabaret Balkan, Anomie, Prison Reform
Document Summary
Prison riot conditions improved in 60s 70s and 80s but riots increased which contradicts this theory: 2. Even though prison riots do occur in maximum there is no clear correlation to old or new institutions to have riots. Bad prison conditions alone are not only factor: 3. Powder keg theory over predicts the amount of riots that occur, if the theory was valid there would be more riots: powder keg theory is a statement of necessary conditions but not sufficient conditions. You have to get angry people to get a riot (necessary) but not sufficient because not all prisons have riots. They grow up in a poor area, poor jobs, live in a bad area. Strain theory blocked, these people feel inferior or victimized: they want success but these opportunities are blocked, so what they do are available means or criminal activities. Inmates want a better lifestyle in a riot most common is pay.
