Not typically dangerous, if they"re left untreated or ignored they can become the groundwork for much more serious sexual offending. Ex: ted bundy was a peeping tom when he was a teenager. An underlying tendency toward violent sexual behaviour particularly coercive paraphilias. Paraphilia: must have erotic sexual feelings for a minimum of 6 months, sexual impulse disorders- intensely arousing, reoccurring, and considered deviant when you compare these beahviours to societal norms. Diagnostic criteria in dsm 4+5 only diagnosed if it causes distress and impairs their functioning. Usually see 2-3 paraphilic behaviours occurring together almost exclusively in the male population (20:1) Compulsion to act on these erotic intentions. To be diagnosed: the person acts on these urges or is distressed by the urges. Key problem: sexual arousal is detached from loving relationships. Person feels compelled to act and has no method or tools to stop their behaviour. In early adolescence, arousal patterns haven"t stablizied yet sexual behaviour is still in formation.
