Movement for greater participation of women in public life = rose at end of 19th century. Major strands: temperance movement (prohibition of alcohol), Missionary and charitable activities (opportunity for women to become involved in public life) suffragette movement: establish voting rights of women. Women = involved in women"s christian temperance union, young women"s christian. Association (ywca), charities, campaigns these organizations = forerunners to profession of social work. 1950 and onwards: more and more canadian women = began to enter workforce faced inequality of lower income, availability of less prestigious jobs also expected to fulfill household responsibilities. The mother"s allowance (1916): established by manitoba gov"t, first legislated welfare program. Women did not get same earnings as men nor prestigious jobs as them. Poverty: women = substantial segment of the working poor high poverty rates found among unattached women under 65, unattached women 65 or older, single mothers with children.
