SOCWK 301 - Lecture 2 - Self and Others
tool/instrument used by social workers in order to perform professional tasks: themself,
act as the instruments of change
- create a helping/working rls. at micro/macro lvls which serves as medium where
change happens
- knowledge of self (self awareness) = key to effective social work practice
Self and Identity (four types)
personal: self-concept based on personal attributes (“I am kind and generous”)
social: group/community identity, self-concept based on attributes of a group one aligns
- stereotypes come from overgeneralizations about people falling in these
avowed: image we have of ourselves
ascribed: identity assigned by others, based on how people see us
** when students from racialized backgrounds are asked to complete the sentence, “I am
______”, they usually refer their nationality. But white students rarely mention being white
What is Meant by “Other?”
when a person has one certain aspect of an identity that is different
seven categories: social class, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age,
physical/mental ability
often has effect of marginalizing inds. and groups in society
othering: sphere of power rls. where each person defines both her/himself and others
- intrinsic part of human consciousness and experiences
- self = assigned positive value while other = assigned a negative value
- ex; “Us vs. Them”, creates a mentality of division
- often used against those who are marginalized and in minority
- gives rise to various forms of oppression (classism, racism, sexism, etc.)
dominant group: seen as “norm” while subordinate group: seen as inferior, “Other”
